Green Flag

What is it all about?

Be clean, be green and let the green flag be seen!

We are very proud to say that we are a Green School. Last year we won our first Green Flag for litter and waste. This year we have recently won a second Green Flag for our school for energy. There are 7 steps involved in the green flag.

  • Green Schools Committee
  • Environmental Review
  • Action Plan
  • Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Curriculum Work
  • Informing and Involving.
  • Green Code

  • Encourage children to use lunchboxes and flasks
  • Reduce the amount of waste going to landfill

We have been worked very hard to win this flag for our school.

Things we have done to save energy in school are:

  • Turning off lights when they are not needed.
  • Making sure that all computers are turned off at the end of the day.
  • Turn off/lower down the heating before opening the windows.
  • Make sure all doors are closed. We have set up a "door dudes" programme to make sure all doors are closed.
  • We had an energy week where all the classes did lots of lessons about energy.
  • We hosted Guzzler workshops in Senior Infants and First Class and the children learnt all about energy saving.
  • We have energy savers in each class who are responsible for making sure that all the lights and computers are turned off.

On March 4th we held a day of action. This involved having a low energy day.

  • Switched off all lights in the classrooms.
  • Switched off all c.d. Players, interactive whiteboards and computers.
  • All photocopying done the day before.
  • Intercom not used.
  • Heating turned down in classrooms within reason.
  • Encouraged all staff and children to eat lunches that didn't require energy to make them, e.g. sandwiches instead of soup etc.
  • Asked all children to make an effort to walk or cycle to school where possible- to encourage this we gave every child a footprint if they walked or cycle to school. They wrote their name on this footprint. We made a trail of all these footprints and displayed them along the stairs in the hall.
  • We held a poster and colouring competition and the green flag committee chose the winners.
